Hosting PostBoy and MathGirl’s Rehearsal Dinner at Il Palio in Shelton, Connecticut?

The wait is almost over.  Rex’s son, PostBoy, has been dating MathGirl since their senior year at Villanova in 2003, and our family really, really loves this girl.  London and Maddie adore her, and we have countless pictures of our girls with MathGirl at our beach house in Bay Head, New Jersey.  So many pictures, in fact, that I’ve only half-joked with PostBoy that if he broke up with her, he’s the one we’ll have to clip out of all of our family photos.  Thankfully, we moved past that risk when PostBoy asked MathGirl to marry him earlier this year, and the happy couple has been busily planning their wedding in Hamden, CT, reception in Westport, CT, and honeymoon in Costa Rica.

Now it’s up to Rex to host the rehearsal dinner, and we’re looking at Il Palio in Shelton, Connecticut.  It’s about a half hour away from the church, and another half hour away from our hotel, and I’ve found some reviews and information online that include:

  • On Chowhound (March 2007):  “Il Palio is one of the best Italian restaurants in Connecticut. Based on a recent couple of visits, their food, service and presentation are nearly flawless.”  However, that review is over a year and a half old and things can change.  PostBoy and MathGirl may have to go there ahead to test it out.
  • Yelp has three more current reviews from August 2008, including:  “The food at Il Palio is phenomenal. Everything here is top quality. The veal chops are thick and tender, the pasta is always cooked to perfection, and the carpaccio is fantastic. The decor is also gorgeous. It was built using imported Italian tiles and draperies. It is a place to take someone when you want to impressThe restaurant exudes class, and the food has actually gotten better over the years. It is expensive, but if you want a romantic dinner away from the hustle and bustle, this will do the trick quite nicely, especially during the winter when the fireplaces are going in the dining rooms.”  The fireplace in the photo (on right) sure does look cozy!
  • From Il Palio’s web site:  “Conveniently located in Enterprise Corporate Park, Shelton, Connecticut, Il Palio offers exquisitely decorated private dining rooms perfect for all your memorable occasions including corporate events, and private parties. Our service professionals and event planners, attend to every detail, anticipating our customers’ needs and delivering innovative solutions. Our chefs can create authentic Italian, and contemporary dishes for your next social gathering. We focus on reliability, which consistently provides our clients with undeniable elegance that leaves distinct and lasting memories.”  The private party options include two main dining rooms, as well as the Contrada Room (surrounded by the flags of the Il Palio race with a gorgeous mural that wraps around the room, sets a mood for any occasion and can seat up to 75 occupants). There’s also the Siena Lounge, a casual space with a bar, that can accommodate up to 50 people. Off the lounge is a private patio that allows you to meander with nature but I don’t think we’ll be doing much meandering with nature in February so we’re probably better off staying close to the fireplace in one of the main dining rooms.
